Time:   1730h - 1900h CET

Location:  EGIC Stockholm Office, Sweden

With few exceptions, Yemen is a conflict that has fallen off the collective radar in Europe and the West in general. This is largely because it forces people to deal with some very uncomfortable questions including how post-JCPOA Iran was able to divert many millions of dollars to fuel a widespread insurgency and sack the country’s capital Sana’a. Since the Houthi takeover of a huge swarth of territory, there has been a cholera outbreak, a famine and, importantly, starvation. The UN sprung into action and the World Food Programme — with a huge funding stream from Saudi Arabia and others — began trying to protect the most vulnerable: children, women, the elderly. However, the UN has been harassed by Houthi fighters since food aid operations begun and civilian casualties continue to rise.

EGIC organised an information session with Fatima Abo Alasrar who delved-deep and explained the internal dynamics unfolding in Yemen from a socio- political, economic and security prospective. Ms Alasrar presented the main issues involved in Yemen and how to best deal with them.
